Demonic - Frightfest review

Demonic had its European premier at this years Frighfest.
The main gist of the story is about a group of friends who investigate a so called haunted house which has been empty for 25 years since a mass murder happened there.  You see at the beginning that they are all dead except one guy. It then goes into flash back mode whilst also staying in the present and then also shows footage from the video cameras that the group had taken with them as well as found foootage of what actually happened in the haunted house.
Produced by James Wan (Insidious,The Counjuring) you pretty much know what to expect if you have seen those movies. It's pretty much a paint by numbers ghost/horror movie. The running time is a mere 79 minutes and even with the short running time I did get pretty board in places and very bored with the massive amount of jump scares and believe me there is a lot! I like the story idea and the filming and acting is pretty solid but it just didn't work for me, like I say you've seen it all before. One of those films if you have nothing to watch you could do worse but all in all its one I wouldn't bother with again.
Demonic is out DVD 7th September.
5/10

A twist on “found-footage” horror, as a police detective pieces together events leading to the grisly deaths of a group of college students. An inventive and unsettling horror from producer James Wan (Insidious, The Conjuring), with a cast of young talent and established stars, including Frank Grillo (Warrior) and Maria Bello (A History of Violence).

Frank Grillo (Warrior, The Grey, Captain America: Winter Soldier)
Maria Bello (A History of Violence, Payback, Secret Window)
Dustin Milligan (Slither, Shark Night 3D, TV’s 90210)
Bruce Greenwood (Star Trek, TV’s Mad Men)

Synopsis:

When Detective Mark Lewis (Frank Grillo) is called to a local house, he finds the bodies of three slaughtered college students. The only survivor, John (Dustin Milligan) claims they held a séance to summon ghosts of people killed in the house years earlier. Now, three of his friends are dead and two are missing – including his pregnant girlfriend.
Teaming up criminal psychologist Dr Elizabeth Klein (Maria Bello), Det. Lewis investigates the videotapes discovered at the scene to try and uncover what really happened that night. What they find is more terrifying than they ever could have imagined…

Produced by acclaimed horror maestro James Wan, it’s little wonder that Demonic has an innovative approach to the genre. Demonic reinvents the found footage movie by using a mixture of handheld cameras and traditional techniques – the result is a film that gets the best from both filmmaking styles, delivering shocks in the way that only found footage can, while letting the central mystery unfold organically.
For a director still making his name in genre cinema, Will Canon does a masterful job of building suspense throughout the movie – and following the trend of films such as Sinister, Paranormal Activity and Oculus, it’s only a matter of time before the supernatural forces bring out the big scares!
Demonic also boasts great on-screen talent, with established stars Frank Grillo and Maria Bello leading a cast of young actors on the tip on big things in Hollywood. See it if you dare!

INSIDIOUS: CHAPTER 3 - COMING OCTOBER 12TH

Insidious wasn't bad Darth Maul in a ghost film ripping off Poltergeist blah blah blah, Insidious 2 I saw at the cinema with my nephew in an afternoon surrounded by teenagers on phones screaming even before anything happened, One of the worse afternoons and cinema experiences ever, I dodged going to see Insidious 3, Not because they were bad films but being a grumpy old fart I couldn't pay that much money and go through that again! Reading the reviews Insidious 3 sounds pretty promising, A prequel so it could be interesting I guess, only time will tell, watch this space for a review coming very soon,

Truly Terrifying (Fake Tan and nose job. On the right)

"Shockingly good" ★★★★ - The Daily Telegraph

From the makers of Saw, Sinister and The Conjuring comes the third chapter of this terrifying series. Exploring the earlier experiences of psychic Elise (Lin Shaye), Insidious: Chapter 3 is a genuinely scary thrill-ride with a chilling atmosphere and jump-out-of-your-seat scares.

Starring

Dermot Mulroney(The Grey, Stoker, TV’s Shameless), Lin Shaye (Insidious, A Nightmare on Elm Street, There’s Something About Mary), Angus Sampson (Insidious, Mad Max: Fury Road, TV’s Fargo), Stefanie Scott (Wreck it Ralph, No Strings Attached)

Writer & Director

Leigh Whannell (Writer of Saw, Dead Silence, Insidious, Cooties)

Synopsis

The terrifying prequel that takes Insidious back to the beginning…

When teenager Quinn Brenner (Stefanie Scott) senses that her late mother is trying to contact her, she seeks help from gifted psychic Elise Rainier (Lin Shaye). However, Elise's tragic past makes her reluctant to use her abilities. After Quinn is attacked by a malevolent entity, her father (Dermot Mulroney) pleads with Elise for help. With support from two parapsychologists, Elise ventures deep into The Further -- where she finds a powerful demon with an insatiable craving for human souls.

It’s rare for the third installment of any franchise to live up to the standards of its predecessors, but with its creepy atmosphere, big scares, and nightmarish demons, Insidious: Chapter 3 is a more than worthy addition to the successful franchise. It’s little wonder: Leigh Whannell is the creator of the hugely successful Saw and knows the genre’s terrifying ins and outs perfectly. He’s not only one of horror’s most creative minds but also a master of tension and timing. Leigh once again returns to the role of crackpot ghost hunter, Specs; starring alongside an excellent cast that includes genre veterans (Lin Shaye), current hot stars (Dermot Mulroney), and emerging talent (Stefanie Scott). This is one prequel horror fans won’t want to miss!

That's it I'm finished, Goodbye - Sharktopus VS Whalewolf!

Sharktopus VS WhaleWolf, Really? Sharknado 3 etc...............
Now, I do love a great B movie but surely this has got to be coming to the end of it's run, These films are terrible, The CGI is terrible, The scripts are terrible and the acting terrible. All basically 80's popstars and actors that can't get work jumping onto the SYFY wagon, leave it!!
Now, I love Roger Corman but these films are truly just using his name to push them but even Roger Corman fans see these films and don't bother, I mean, Have you seen Sharknado 3????
Any rant over and I'm done with the SYFY films now, But I know some still enjoy them so good luck for the future!

The Death Of "Superman Lives" what happened? - Reviewed.

I really don't know where to start with this review, So many frustrating points, A good point to start would be to ask why the fuck didn't "Superman Lives" ever get made?
Now I know that photograph of Nicolas Cage as Superman has been floating around the internet for a good while now..........

But don't let that one photograph fool you, what Tim Burton had lined up sounded easily on par with his Batman movies."Jonny your a fool!!" I hear you say and yes I know I am but believe me, Watch this and you may change your mind. Now it is said within the documentary that Bryan Singer director of the truly bland "Superman Returns"used to carry the above photograph with him and when questioned by studio executives about the look of his Superman he would produce the said photograph and comment "Well, At least it doesn't look like this!" Ha, Ha, Move on.

The first script was written by super Fan-boy the one and only Kevin Smith who features heavily and rather amusingly in this, Along with his backwards and forward separate conversations, Film maker Jon Schnepp talks with Kevin Smith and Hairdresser turned producer Jon Peters. Now Jon Peters is another story all together.

Jon Peters is what you would expect to see from a Hollywood money man, Kevin smith tells the story of how he wrote his script and took it around to read to Peters, The story goes that when Smith arrived Peters made him read it to him whilst he lay down envisioning the film on his ceiling, It may sound ridiculous but it is confirmed by Peters!  Jon Peters idea so it goes was that h didn't want those pants on the outside, Didn't want Superman to fly but did want a giant spider and what he wants he usually gets, Now with the giant spider he eventually did get that in another movie but watch the documentary to find out what dreadful movie that eventually ended up in.

So in summing up, The Death Of Superman lives is brilliant and frustrating in equal measures, You have to feel for the people involved, The story boarders the suit makers, Nicholas Cage and Tim Burton, I was surprised how far the project actually went and even more surprised on which film the studio made instead, Shocking to say the least, Watch this and you'll agree I'm sure! Seek it out, Great stuff,
9/10

R. D. Laing 'Asylum' mental health documentary on DVD for the first time 10 August 2015

Hello Folks,
Now,Have you ever hear of R.D Laing? Well I had many year ago when reading books and watching various documentaries about old style Asylums but he had slipped my mind until I saw that this was being released. Basically what you see and read is beyond shocking and up to very recent times how so called "Mentally ill" people were treated, Electric shock therapy, Isolation 24/7 and even the tried and tested 100% failure that was the good old labatomy. But R.D. Laing tried to change that,Now it has to be said that those huge asylums were making an incredible amount of cash off the families that didn't know where to turn or who to turn to that had a family member with the likes of depression but  R.D Laing pioneered treatment and is himself in my eyes a pioneer. I personally can't wait to see this and the Bio-pic of an unforgotten Scottish Legend. Review coming very soon,
Jonny T.

ASYLUM

Trailblazing psychiatrist R.D. Laing changed the way mental illness was treated with his unique approach to therapy and in the early 1970s he allowed a film crew access to a group of his patients in one of the most incredible fly-on-the-wall documentaries ever made, Asylum. Now this fascinating film makes its UK DVD début courtesy of OEG Classic Movies. With David Tennant on board to play the renowned Glasgow-born analyst Ronald David Laing in a major new biopic, this timely release gives an insight into mental illness as film-maker Peter Robinson and his crew enter the world of the schizophrenic residents of a hospital in Archway, London. Filmed over a seven-week period the film takes us behind the doors and into the lives of mentally ill patients and Laing's controversial approach to healing them through compassion and freedom. Originally released in 1972 this groundbreaking film comes to UK DVD for the first time on 10 August 2015 complete with a slew of fascinating special features.

"Ronald David Laing (7 October 1927 – 23 August 1989), usually cited as R. D. Laing, was a Scottish psychiatrist who wrote extensively on mental illness – in particular, the experience of psychosis. Laing's views on the causes and treatment of serious mental dysfunction, greatly influenced by existential philosophy, ran counter to the psychiatric orthodoxy of the day by taking the expressed feelings of the individual patient or client as valid descriptions of lived experience rather than simply as symptoms of some separate or underlying disorder. Laing was associated with the anti-psychiatry movement, although he rejected the label.Politically, he was regarded as a thinker of the New Left"
