Dead Mine – Reviewed By Jonny T.

Jonny here with my review of Dead Mine.

So what we have here with Dead Mine is a group of travellers, English man, American, Ladies and local experts all out on an expedition exploring old mines, but when they come under attack from a group of local militia they take shelter in a “Dead Mine” only to have a hand grenade thrown at them threw the entrance exploding then sealing the entrance with no possible means of escape, The only option they have Is then to go deeper in to the mine to look for a possible escape route.

But things take a turn when the American chap reveals to the others that they are in fact there to find the lost city of gold that is said to be buried within the mine and it also transpires that he is not alone with this knowledge as a few others in the group also know of this plan much to the annoyance of the pretty stereotypical English cockney ex-soldier man, Well at the end of the day there is not a great deal they can do about it now as there is no way out except to find one.



So the venture forth deeper and deeper in to the mine only to discover what at first sight appears to be a disused Japanese army bunker from world war II, They come across a rickety bridge where on the other side is a Japanese flag and half way across lights come on and Japanese propaganda music starts playing, they stop for a while in surprise and eventually the music stops, So not being put off and still on the search for a way out they venture onwards as all good explorers would. Arriving in the main bunker part they come across all manner of paraphernalia including some old photographs depicting severely skinny Japanese prisoners then it is revealed by one of the travellers that she knows that this used to be an experiment camp on humans, bad times ahead!

When the hand grenade was thrown into the bunker one of their soldier guides/protectors had his leg crushed by a rock and was duly dragged out so of course they brought him with them and find him an old hospital type bed to lay on for a while, not before snapping his bone back into place of course, the others start wondering around and come across a room with what appears to be some kind of Japanese soldier in it and he is still alive and duly attacks the two explorers before being overpowered and disarmed, they remove his mask to reveal a very wrinkly old Japanese soldier that has been down there since the war ended but believes the war is still on going until convinced by the lady that it is over, during this time we see the injured guide on a bed when all of a sudden the sand beneath him starts slowly to sing down, We then get to see him dragged into the ground and disappear along a hidden tunnel, one of the other guides peers down the whole only to see what appears to look like a skinny version of Bane from Batman! Chase on.



One by one the descend down the hole on the lookout for the man that dragged down, we eventually see that this skinny Bane was not the only one down there, far from it, there are loads of them, Now I have to say this for me is where the film finally took off, it seemed a long time getting there, I won’t spoil it but there is a lot more badness than skinny Bane’s down there, it flows along at a nice pace from there on in with some effective gore and shock and pretty decent make up effects, Don’t get me wrong it’s not the greatest horror movie you will ever see but it hit all the right buttons, it was a kind of mash up of the likes of The Descent, The Ruins and other such movies and to me it was a refreshing change from yet another god damn “Of the Dead” awful cash in Zombie flick and not another Paranormal caught on tape/found footage shake the hell out of the camera malarkey!

So all in all a fun ride once it kicked off,

Synopsis:

It is great to see the return of Joe Taslim (The Raid) and Sam Hazeldine (The Raven) leading a film stuffed with action, great scares, visual effects and impressive make-up.
With an intriguing combination of human experiments gone awry, enclosed spaces and the real effects of war on soldiers and civilians, this suspense filled action-horror will keep you guessing to the very end.
